Portraits of Buildings... a tribute to architects, time and the way things decay

Admiralty House, Simon's Town: 2001 Oils (762 x 609)

I was asked to do a painting for auction to raise funds for Admiralty House in Simon's Town. This is the result and I enjoy the sunlit feeling about it. The auction is on 11 Mar 01, so I am keen to see what price it goes for!

Ascensor (910 x 760) Watercolour, 1993

Ascensor 1993 Watercolour(600 x 400)

This is a watercolour of the Buren Ascensor in Valparaiso, Chile. The lines in this painting converged and joined wonderfully. I gave it to Cdr Ed Marquez, US Navy as a farewell gift after spending a great year in Valparaiso.

Humberstone 1993 Watercolour (450 x 300)

Humberstone 1993 Watercolour (450 x 300)

Humberstone is a fascinating ghost town in the Atacama Desert in the North of Chile. It used to be a thriving nitrite mining town until the discovery of synthetic nitrite in 1921. The town just died and is probably the spookiest place I've ever visited even though it was in blazing, broad daylight! The entire town is preserved by the dryness and heat of the desert and is full of amazing site to paint. This is a view of the bandstand and tennis court and I tried to capture the desolation, heat and rust. I hope to do more like this sometime and I'd love to go back there.

Almacen 1993 Watercolour (500 x 400)

Yet another Chilean building... these general dealer type shops populate virtually every street corner in Valparaiso. This was the first painting that I did after our arrival there in Dec 92 and brings back great memories every time I look at it.

District 6: Hearth 1981 Watercolour (360 x 250)

District 6 was a coloured township on the outskirts of Cape Town. It throbbed with life, culture and character until the government decided that the value of the property and the criminal activity had got too high. It was demolished and the entire community moved to "new" accommodation on Mitchell's Plain. I painted a series of 6 watercolours (4 exhibited here) to commemorate the area. Each one weeps of ghosts and tragedy.

Pilgrim's Rest 1996 Oils (960 x 762)

Pilgrim's Rest 1996 Oils (910 x 762)

Pilgrim's Rest is a small mining town in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. It has been commercialised recently and is a major tourist attraction. This painting was done before the tourists flooded in and captures that hot, lazy atmosphere that is so typical of any small South African town on a Saturday afternoon. As soon as it was finished, my wife Joey claimed it as hers. It hangs in my house and is one of my personal favourites. Somehow, the lines just all seemed to work together, almost unintentionally.

South Africa House 1999 Pen & Ink (350 x 270)

South Africa House 1999 Pen & Ink (350 x 270)

South Africa House, London is the SA Embassy. I was commissioned to do this drawing for the Ambassador to use on a Christmas card and other printed material. It's also used to enhance their official website.

Valparaiso 1993 Watercolour (300 x 270)

The patchwork architecture of Valparaiso is painting heaven. The jumbled houses, corrugated iron roofs, walls and vibrant colours make superb subjects. This semi-abstract view of the town was a small study for an intended huge oil which I've never got round to, but it makes a great little watercolour which I really enjoy.
